Molly and Thomas Martens were convicted of Jason’s murder in August 2017, and each sentenced to 25 years in prison. They continued to fight appeals by the Martens to have their convictions overturned. In 2021 the supreme court of North Carolina overturned the convictions and ordered a retrial of the Martens which will take place in 2022. Despite all this Corbett Lynch is keen that the book is a sign of hope that through the greatest of challenges, intense pain and turmoil, love can and will win and the human spirit can survive the greatest of challenges.
