My most recent book, Lest We Forget War and Peace in 100 British Monuments has taken me right across the United Kingdom on a quest to uncover a story of national warring and national mourning, of fighting each other and fighting together, in a book published to coincide with the end of World War Two. I was joined by a stellar cast of veterans and historians, families of the fallen and local campaigners, to better understand what our memorial-studded country says about us, then and now. As with all my previous books, I've been lucky enough to draw on rich oral testimony and contemporary voices in Lest We Forget, including the Falklands' hero Simon Weston and HRH the Duke of Kent, as well my last few beloved Bletchley and Army Girl veterans. It has been a great priviledge to spend the last decade working with our most treasured final surivivors from World War Two. Today, with conflict raging all around, I am constantly reminded of the debt we owe those who fought and died for our freedom in 1939-45, and in more recent contested conflicts, and those who will do once again, in the future. Lest We Forget - freedom is not free.
