Susan Calder was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in 1951. She completed a Bachelor of Urban Studies at Concordia University, worked as an insurance claims examiner in Montreal, married and had two sons. At the age of 39, she decided to become a writer. Six years later she moved to Calgary, Alberta. Susan has published travel features, short stories, poems, and six novels. Four of the novels are part of her contemporary mystery series set in Calgary. The series follows the adventures and personal growth of insurance adjuster sleuth Paula Savard, a baby boomer searching for meaning and passion in her life. In 2024, BWL released Susan’s first historical mystery novel, A Killer Whisky, set in Calgary during the 1918 Influenza pandemic, World War One, and Prohibition. A doctor's receptionist and a police detective join forces to solve a suspicious death. Susan is currently working on a second historical novel, which will take place in Czechia and Canada at the outbreak of World War One. The novel is inspired by her maternal grandparents’ immigration to Canada from (then) Czechoslovakia after the Great War.
