In "Grass That Leaves Greener," Hays’s poetry is a praise to the process of dialectical progress, exploring the escapisms—the “eschatons and egresses”—of the human condition through his narratively developmental themes of existentialism, mythology, theology, hermeneutics, epic poetry, and other literary allusions. In his next cycle of poems, "aurochs maladaptive," Hays posits his personas as ebullient beasts painted on mythological caves, as “aurochs” overpowered (maladaptive), suffering brutal, chaotic, mysterious forces—some to annihilation and some to surprising escape. Alongside, Hays surprises as he delivers his spoken word, rap, and jazz lyrics. With his subsequent stage play and dialogue novel, "Closer (than you think)" and "What Light Was," Hays shifts his writing endeavors and dry humor to enticing historical fiction. “We must realize our reservoirs of creativity beyond overcoming our heartaches and trials. As our urgent motivation, it is imperative that we engage our creative capacities through our vital working "mythos" that we need to be most real. As a metaphysic, as an aesthetic, poetry is creative engagement with the world that provides meaning, value, and significance to what most matters. We can be creative enough—‘poet enough’—to integrate solutions that mitigate our challenges; compelling our creativities, we can quell our existential nausea, dispel our ennui, and silence our angst. Nurtured creativity can overflood our drives for mere survival. Creativity allows us to discover resurrection. In command of creativity, we can be life-giving, we can give all we’ve been given to give—our love—to the people we’ve been given to treasure.”
