I cover the quirks and wonders of the natural world, and the ways humanity has changed it, for good and ill. I’ve written about creatures from the cholera bacterium and malaria-carrying mosquito to the sea otter, the gray wolf, the woolly mammoth and the saber-toothed cat. Recent articles address the need to revive wetlands to fend off water pollution, the fate of native fish in California’s contested waters, the lessons of traditional Aboriginal landscape burning, and impacts of climate change on wildlife and human health. The Marsh Builders: the Fight for Clean Water, Wetlands and Wildlife will be published by Oxford University press in May 2018. My first book, Once & Future Giants, was published in 2011.
