Robert Holmes, LVO, was born and educated in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in 1940. Following success in an open competition, he joined the British Foreign Service in 1957. His first overseas posting was to Moscow in 1961, when Ruari Chisholm was the head of the MI6 station and Oleg Penkovsky was passing invaluable military secrets to the West. Holmes left Moscow in October 1962, at the time of Penkovsky’s arrest and the Cuban Missile Crisis. He also served in Budapest (1965-66, still during the depths of the Cold War), and in Santiago (Chile), Bonn, Tonga, Oslo, Chicago and Madrid. In 1988 the Queen appointed him a Lieutenant of the Royal Victorian Order. He retired from the Diplomatic Service in 1994 with the rank of First Secretary. For the next four years he held an administrative appointment at professorial level at the University of Glasgow, after which he set up his own consultancy company which he dissolved in 2006. His retirement plans included trying his hand at writing a book, which eventually evolved into ‘A Spy Like No Other: the Cuban Missile Crisis and the KGB links to the Kennedy Assassination’. This book was published by Biteback Publishing in October 2012, marking the 50th anniversary of the Crisis. In his younger days Holmes ran marathons and 50km. cross-country ski races. Now he is a Rotarian and a keen lawn bowls player. He dabbles energetically in DIY from time to time, and enjoys walking in the countryside. He has two daughters and a son by his first wife, Margaret, whom he met whilst serving in Moscow. Margaret died in 1995. He now lives with his second wife, Nancy, in the village of Houston, near Glasgow, Scotland.
