I’m the author of the novels Railsong and The Sly Company of People Who Care, and a cricketish book called Pundits from Pakistan. Rather than list honours – *of course* I have received them! – let me say what I love about writing, in the hope this transmits to the books. I love the wholehearted grapple with life literature involves. I love the commitment it asks for, the nourishing of people and ideas and feelings, a commitment akin to parenting. I love languages, dialects, improvisations, and the possibilities in making from them a written language that is open and free. I like how much this labour exhausts me yet enlarges me. I love the mystery of it. I hope you like the books.
