Nick Thorpe is a British author and broadcaster, born in the village of Upnor, in Kent, in February 1960. He has lived in Budapest, Hungary since February 1986. He has five sons. He is the East and Central Europe Correspondent for the BBC. His first book, 89-The Unfinished Revolution - Power and Powerlessness in Eastern Europe was published by Reportage Press in London in November 2009. It is still available on Kindle (Endeavour Media). It covers the events he witnessed at first hand for 25 years from 1983 to 2008 in eastern Europe and the Balkans, including the fall of Communism and the violent breakup of Yugoslavia. His 2nd book, The Danube - A Journey Upriver from the Black Sea to the Black Forest was published in November 2013 by Yale University Press. It is now available in 6 languages: English, German, Italian, Hungarian, Polish and Hebrew. His 3rd book, The Road Before Me Weeps - On the Refugee Route through Europe, will be published in March 2019 by Yale University Press.
