Michaela Leslie-Rule is the author of the forthcoming book How We See Us: Young People Imagining a Path to Their Futures, published by Harvard Education Press (Summer 2025), which explores how young people think and feel about education, work, and career. She is a researcher, artist, and cultural strategist who has spent more than two decades advancing racial and gender justice through the power of narrative. As a Senior Program Officer at the Gates Foundation, Michaela designs and invests in narrative strategies to improve students' math education experiences and learning outcomes. Before working in philanthropy, she designed and led audience research, theater, film, and narrative change projects that spanned the United States, Europe, and East and Central Africa. Michaela is a founding member of the Spiritual Technologies Project, exploring the unique knowledge held by Black elders in the American South, the director of Wanawake 8, a short film documenting Tanzanian women’s resilience in the face of gender based violence. She also co-developed the Emmy™-nominated Fundamental film series, produced by Global Fund for Women and directed by Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy. She is the founder of the Seattle and Oakland-based research and communications firm, Fig and Sass, and was formerly Senior Advisor at Wonder: Strategies for Good. She earned dual master's degrees in Public Health and Public Administration at the University of Washington and a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. Michaela lives in Seattle with her family and is a deep believer in the power of story and collaboration to create long-lasting social transformation.
