Mark Hallink is the author of The Entangled Compass, the first novel of a hard science fiction trilogy about the first permanent human settlement on Mars — and about what a civilization founded on a betrayal decides to become. He is interested in the part of the story most Mars novels skip: not the landing, but the founding. What rules do you write when there is no one left to appeal to? What do you owe an intelligence you built? The trilogy is engineering-honest by design — the physics is meant to hold up to readers who will check it. He comes to fiction late and on purpose. At twenty-three he founded a company, built it into a global business serving clients in twenty-four countries, ran it for thirty-two years, and sold it in 2020 to write. Three decades of building an organization from nothing turns out to be reasonable preparation for a novel about people trying to do the same thing on another planet. He has also written four nonfiction and children's titles, including Quiet Money, a nominee for the IPPY and NYC Big Book Awards. He holds an honours degree in psychology from the University of Waterloo and is a four-time world champion in cowboy mounted shooting. He splits his time between Western Canada and North Florida with his wife Alice, their horses Pumpkin, Spicey, and JG, and their dog Ima. The Entangled Compass arrives from Springwell Publishing in 2026.
