Mark L. O’Brien is the founder of Growth and Goodness and the creator of the GROWTH Journey, a research-based program that helps people grow, heal, and find meaning after trauma, loss, and other deeply disruptive life experiences. Mark’s work sits at the intersection of positive psychology, posttraumatic growth, narrative identity, and moral repair. He brings together rigorous science, lived experience, and a deep respect for human dignity to help people rebuild their lives, not by bypassing pain, but by integrating it into a wiser, more purposeful way of living. He holds a master’s degree in Applied Positive Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania, where he also serves as an assistant instructor at the Positive Psychology Center. He has taught, coached, and advised individuals and organizations working in behavioral health, substance use, trauma recovery, and criminal justice reform, including helping to design and implement large-scale public health and trauma-informed initiatives. Mark is the author of Crashing: I Love You. Forgive Me., a memoir about surviving a catastrophic car crash, living with responsibility for irreversible harm, and discovering the long, complex work of forgiveness, meaning, and growth. His personal story deeply informs his professional work, grounding theory in compassion and honesty. Through the GROWTH Journey, Mark translates years of one-on-one coaching, teaching, and research into an accessible, carefully designed program for people who want to live with clarity, integrity, and hope after adversity. Mark lives outside Baltimore with his wife, Maria, their three children, and a playful pup who volunteers as a therapy animal and takes his job very seriously.
