The page and the canvas are the holiest private spaces I know, and the classroom is the holiest shared space. For many years, I was a teacher who wrote, a writer who taught, and an artist who painted when time allowed. Now, apart from speaking engagements, I write and paint full time. My heritage is biracial--English mother, Jamaican father. A cross between Mary Poppins and Tina Turner. I grew up poor in London where I dreamed of one day being less poor. I was in a reggae band that saw no success until I left. I have taught students in Arkansas, Virginia, Massachusetts, England, and Sierra Leone, and I've marveled at their creative abilities. Our stories are our penance and our salvation, so writing and painting is how I pray. As Man Cryday, a Tree Witch in my new novel THE BIRD TRIBE says, "Elders have a sacred obligation to save a future they won't live to see so the young live to see it." We're not handling this obligation well right now. We must do better. The future depends on it.
