Karen J. Maroda, Ph.D., ABPP is Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at the Medical College of Wisconsin and in private practice in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She is the past ethics chair and board member of Division 39 (Psychoanalysis) of the American Psychological Association, and past president of Section III, Women, Gender and Psychoanalysis, of Division 39. In 2012 she was honored by the American Psychological Association by being elected as a Fellow, given to those who have significantly contributed on a national level to the theory and practice of psychology. She served on the board of directors for the American Board of Professional Psychology in the psychoanalysis specialty area from 2011-2012. The author of three previous books, The Power of Countertransference, Seduction, Surrender and Transformation, and Psychodynamic Techniques. Dr. Maroda has also published numerous journal articles, book chapters and book reviews. She lectures nationally and internationally on a variety of aspects of the therapeutic process, including the place of affect, self-disclosure, countertransference, legitimate authority, and the need for clinical guidelines. On the board of three major journals, she actively encourages her colleagues to write and talk about what they actually do as therapists.
