I like to call myself an author nowadays, but it wasn’t always so. Three decades of my life were spent under the stifling blanket of policy and procedure that is modern-day policing. When I hung up my police superintendent’s uniform for the final time I was gasping for the oxygen of creativity —and the company of people who don’t eat Mars Bars for dinner at 3 am. The online creative writing course run by Oxford University proved to be the hyperbaric therapy I was seeking – and introduced me to my new tribe. My debut novel, Under the Hickory Tree, is the product of my freshly oxygenated brain. I hope you enjoy reading it even half as much as I enjoyed writing it.
