When my great grandmother Yetta was a young woman, she looked out her window one last time to see whether the war zone she was leaving was Poland or Russia that day. She crossed an ocean to choose her own nationality. My earliest memories include Yetta laughing in our suburban backyard, and me imagining new melodies while riding home from visiting her daughter, my grandmother Dora. My parents drove Dora’s old Dodge Dart so they could give me a Rolls Royce education. So when I called them from MIT in 1982 to say I wanted to major in music, they were… excited. I ended up majoring in math while directing an MIT a cappella group, the Chorallaries. Decades later, after losing my “day job” in software engineering while recording my third album, I stopped composing and built a career in mathematics. But through years of psychotherapy, I began to reinvent myself by changing my PTSD-like reactions to stress — opening a door to a new world where I could sing, and write, again. Hearing one of my new songs, my wife Helen said, “You’ve got a whole musical there.” I said, “Nah.” But she was right. In Following Jimmy Valentine, I’ve written a story of personal reinvention that parallels my own, punctuated with humor and with music that blends the worlds of Beethoven, Basie, and the Beatles. This complete musical, created in audiobook format, is crafted to be heard anywhere, by anyone ready to reinvent themselves.
