At age twenty I was selected as a Rotary International Scholar and traveled to the Soviet Union to meet with high ranking government officials who were three times my age and four times my girth. When I returned to the US I was expected to deliver public speeches about my experience. The good thing was that my dad was a Dale Carnegie speaking coach. The bad news was that he was an energetic judge of my performances and would be attending many of my talks. I learned then that what audiences want to hear is stories! I know I have plenty to tell--how I was trained by secret agents who followed me while I tutored Russians in English and shared English language books with them--none of this allowed by my visa. The stories worked. Fifteen years later I found myself negotiating with Russias again.
