Baba Dr. Jaiya John (Mshkiki Odeh Inini, Medicine Heart Man) was orphan-born and raised on ancient Indigenous Anasazi and Pueblo lands in the high desert and sacred mountains of New Mexico. As an Indigenous living ancestor, he serves out his life assignment worldwide through freedom work, mystic medicine poetry, photography, and filmmaking. Jaiya is the founder of Soul Water Rising, a global rehumanizing mission to eradicate oppression, stir the soul to remember itself, and reveal the divine in being human. He is the author of 22 books, including Daughter Drink This Water, Wildflowers Praying at Midnight, Fragrance After Rain, and Freedom: Medicine Words for your Brave Revolution. He uses the ancient technology of poetry to penetrate identity and trauma defenses to reach the tender place within where soulful transformation may occur. ln his writing and teaching, poetry becomes a time portal, memory keeper, dream weaver, ancestral altar, and instrument for collective liberation. Poetry articulates the soul. Jaiya narrates and produces the podcast, I Will Read for You: The Voice and Writings of Jaiya John. He is a former professor of social psychology at Howard University and holds doctorate and master’s degrees in social psychology from the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he was a National Science Foundation Fellow with a focus on intergroup and race relations. As an undergraduate, he attended Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon, and lived in Kathmandu, Nepal, where he studied Tibetan Holistic Medicine through Indigenous Tibetan healers and trekked to the base camp of Mt. Everest.
