Dr. Echevarria is a mother, a wife, an educator, a champion for single moms and an AirBnb hostess with the most-est. As a Puerto Rican Leader of Color, she is excited to work in the pursuit of equity for marginalized populations. Her dissertation work focused specifically on her passion to provide equitable GT Programming options to multilingual learners. Dr. Echevarria has presented at the Colorado Association of Gifted and Talented Conference, the Highway 21 Technology Conference, the Colorado Association of Latinx Administrators and Superintendents Conference and the Colorado Association for Bilingual Education Conference. She has recently written a chapter in the Amazon Best Seller, Hospitable Hosts. Dr. Echevarria's experience with Airbnb has helped her overcome many struggles that are common to Latinx populations, including homelessness, divorce and extreme financial hardship. As a single mother to two children after a high-conflict divorce, she was struggling to pay off attorney debt and keep her home. Starting her Airbnb business, she was able to complete her Doctorate degree and maintain her home. Latinx populations have a 41% rate of divorce, compared to White populations, which have a 24% divorce rate. This impacts children being raised by Latinx single mothers who are twice as likely to live in poverty as children raised by White single mothers. These statistics are numbing and largely motivated Dr. Echevarria to work towards financial independence, regardless of the odds against her. She is the founder of the STRIVE Single Moms Scholarship fund, a privately funded scholarship for single mothers pursuing graduate degrees.
