Born in Quebec, Dorris Heffron, graduated in literature and philosophy from Queen's University in Canada. While teaching for Oxford University, she wrote three novels acclaimed internationally as pioneers in the genre now known as young adult fiction. They were put on high school courses in Europe,Japan and North America. Returning to Canada, Dorris wrote the popular adult novel A SHARK IN THE HOUSE, about a woman dentist who reluctantly finds herself involved in the aboriginal standoff at Oka. It is a story of love and striving, death and survival, of people on both sides of the barricades. Based on realities like the shark in the house in Oxford, England, this novel shows the strangeness lurking in ordinary lives. Dorris' recent novel, CITY WOLVES, tells the story of Canada's first woman veterinarian who becomes the notorious 'Dog Doctor of Halifax' in the 1890s. After her unusual marriage ends abruptly in Boston, she heads for the Yukon, seeking the legendary sled dogs and arrives in Dawson City at the beginning of the Klondike gold rush. At the heart of the novel is the ancient story of how wolves became sled dogs. Diligently researched, this is a novel of wide appeal, uniquely Canadian and profoundly universal. From age 7 when she began to keep journals, recording the life around her, Dorris has always wanted to write realistic novels with a sense of humour. Having her first published at the young age of 25, Dorris takes a long time to research and write her novels, each one pioneering in some way. She has also always been actively involved in the writing community, serving on various boards and committees. She will become Chair of The Writers Union of Canada, June 2013-June 2014. Dorris now lives 2 hours north of Toronto with her husband and sled dogs on a property called Little Creek Wolf Range. She is a mother and stepmother with one dozen little grandkids.
