Desmond LaVelle is a writer by trade, a creative director by experience, and a novelist by a refusal to stop typing. An award-winning advertising creative and former Meta creative lead, Desmond has spent much of his career making short things work hard: Super Bowl commercials, social campaigns, headlines, pitches, brand stories, and ideas built to survive in public. But his favorite form has always been the long one—the slow construction of a world, a voice, a mystery, and the bad decisions that keep readers turning pages. His novels include The French Word for Murder, a comedically dark story about an ambitious Bay Area couple, a dream home in France, and a real-estate arrangement that would be perfect if the old woman living in the house would finally cooperate; and The Girl in the Third Window, a gothic tale set in 1833 New Orleans, where a girl named Violet Bell discovers that some houses keep secrets—and some keep children. Desmond’s fiction blends polished storytelling with dry humor, atmospheric detail, and a lifelong fascination with ambition, obsession, and the strange things people do when they want something badly enough.
