Dean Hovey is the award-winning author of Family Trees: A Pine County Mystery. His Pine County and Whistling Pines books are set in rural Northeastern Minnesota communities and tap into local history, politics, and current events. The Pine County Mystery series features Floyd Swenson, CJ Jensen, and Pam Ryan as the protagonists. The Whistling Pines Series are cozies set in a senior citizen's residence, featuring Peter Rogers, the recreation director, as the protagonist. The characters keep the readers laughing. In 2019 Dean added a US National Parks series featuring Doug Fletcher, a retired St. Paul detective, who is drafted as a Park Service investigator. Doug's early investigations in Arizona have expanded to include Texas, Florida, Minnesota, Iowa, South Dakota, Wyoming, California, and even Volcanoes National Park, in Hawaii.
