Long a local historian, and editorial writer for the American Association for State and Local History journal, History News, I turned to fiction to unveil the histories of women who crossed in the country in 1842, the first company of families to move across the land, from Missouri to the Oregon Territory. For that initial trip across, there is the brief daily account by the company clerk and several memoirs written 30 to 40 years later, but not a word by the women who made the trip. Nor are they much mentioned. But what, I wondered would they have thought about, as they made a trip few of them approved of. These women lived in my head for a number of years. Giving voice to the voiceless was very important to me. I have taught local history and lectured about its importance to individuals and to their communities. I have written a dozen dramas about my home in Ithaca and have served as the Tompkins County Historian for two decades. I grew up in Cranford, New Jersey, and have lived in Ithaca, New York most of my life, coming here as the wife of a Cornell University historian. I have two sons, and three grandchildren spread out over the world. I most enjoy talking to people across my dining room table where the best conversations occur. And I happily spend time writing to loved ones who live elsewhere.
