As a Baby Boomer born during World War II, Cam says she "contributed to the population explosion as part of her war effort." Always drawn to horses and mules—though she didn't know the difference as a child—she had little contact with equines until her teenage years. The Memphis Fairgrounds once featured a Thoroughbred racetrack, which is now long gone, but the stables and a practice track have endured. This setting led to her meeting her husband, a cowboy working in the horse business. Cam reflects that she "was born on the wrong side of the Muddy Mississippi." Her family lived in Texas and Oklahoma for several years, where they bred mares to notable AQHA racing stallions for auction at the prestigious Heritage Place facility in Oklahoma City, known for buying and selling racing champions. In addition to conditioning mares and yearlings for sale, they attended a remarkable array of rodeos and jackpots. Rodeo, ranching, and horses create a unique lifestyle that serves as the backdrop for Cam's stories.
