Beverley Douglas was born in Bristol to Jamaican parents in 1964 and grew up in a loving home with her older siblings. With very few recreation facilities, children played in the street or on bomb sites, so concerned parents lobbied the local authority and a safe place play space was provided for all children. The disused colliery and stone yard around the corner from her home was transformed and in 1972, Felix Road Adventure Playground was opened. Beverley has fond memories of the times she spent in this special space. At a young age, Beverley experienced racism and had to flee for her safety while walking home from a youth club. She encountered many challenges with the education system but that didn't stop her from becoming a police officer. In 1983 she joined the Avon and Somerset Special Constabulary and five years later she joined the Regulars. After more than three decades of an enjoyable, sometimes challenging career in 2017 Beverley retired from the force. She and her husband Richard live between the UK and Gozo, Malta where she continues to write.
