Aaron Di Dertseyler was born in Cape Town, South Africa, where his education was interrupted first by junior school, and then by high school in Grahamstown. Unhappy with many aspects of South African society, at eighteen he boarded a boat for London, where, after a brief foray into the medical world, he joined a city merchant bank. In addition to financing, his business career took in resource commercialization in North and South America, the Middle and Far East, in the course of which he spent extended periods of time in Peru, Iran and Hong Kong. Passing through London on one of his trips he met and subsequently married the girl of his dreams. In Africa Aaron flew his own plane on business and to game reserves, and in Papua New Guinea and French Polynesia he scuba-dived among hammer-head sharks. Aaron and his wife live in London, from where they visit their children and grandchildren in the United Kingdom, America, and Australia. For over twenty years he has run a colour-blind charitable trust financing “bright and broke” students studying practical degrees at South African universities. During this period, over 1,000 students have graduated, most of whom would not have been able to attend university without his trust’s support .
