How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings, help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun Read

Although some of the plot points can seem slightly contrived Edward Marston's books are never less than enjoyable. I generally read them at least twice and they are a real race through the time of The Conqueror. I think the background detail is good - certainly in respect of how easily, or otherwise, various cities fell to the Norman march - but it doesn't overwhelm the narrative.
The characters can seem a bit modern at times with their areas of concern but it is a small thing.
I have yet to pick up one of Mr Marston's books that I haven't enjoyed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great addition to the series

This is another great addition that continues the series. The royal commissioners have more mysteries to solve as well as plenty of land disputes arising from the domesday book.

I have now read most of this series. The plots are usually good and the characters strong. The characters do change with each story. I will finish the series although I am a little bored not with the book as it is good. But by now I can predict the outcome. Well written, good placement and some good insight into this age.

5.0 out of 5 stars Marston never disappoints.

Once again Marston combines historical fact with totally captivating fiction. His character detail is tantalising and never disappointing. You get drawn in and consumed with the story line. Ralph and Gervase are deep and colourful characters and sprinkled with just the right amount of humour along the way !
Absolutely would recommend you to read the entire series, I'm hooked and don't want to get to the end !! Brilliant book brilliant author.

"The Hawks of Delamere", my second foray into the "Doomsday" series, did not disappoint. Edward Marston has the knack of holding the reader's attention from start to finish and you certainly don't want to put this book down! The characters are all so lifelike that you could imagine being in their company in days of yore. Yet another superb historical novel that will make you rush to order the next one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Series set in the time of William the Conquer but it is a great series of that time

Loved the characters and the mystery they solved in the course of their business for the King. Sometimes I thought the characters mused to themselves a little long.

4.0 out of 5 stars Twists, turns, and great characters

Cover art has little to do with this delightful mystery by Edw. Marston set soon after the Norman conquest (Domesday Series). The characters are believable although the dialogue seems a bit stilted at times. This series has been out of print/unavailable until recently, when I was delighted to find the series available on Kindle. There are quite a few books in the series, each set in a different location in England while the royal commissioners iron out property disputes that came to light during the initial inventory ordered by William the Conqueror. The Delamere Forest is located near (or on?) the border between England and Wales (close to Chester), so this book brings in the fierce nationalism of the Welsh as well as the attitudes of the Normans and the Saxons. Recommended for anyone interested in this historical period and a thoroughly enjoyable read.

I love mysteries in Medieval settings and I enjoy the whole Domesday series very much. I'm not fond of Marston's other series but I do enjoy his Dillman & Masefield series written as Conrad Allen.
