I thought Book No. 1 in this series was great and was looking forward to reading No. 2, but I was also a little nervous about it, fearing it might fall short of expectations. Luckily, that was NOT the case. I don't know if I like this one better than the first or not, but I sure didn't like it any less! I thought he did a great job of making a thoughtful (but still exciting) story out of what could have, in the hands of a lesser talent, easily become "Jaws Meets Bikini Party Beach" schlock. That's not to say this isn't "B Movie"-style entertainment, or that I have anything against bikini beach babes, but it's GOOD "B Movie" entertainment, like "Them!", The Blog,", "The Giant Gila Monster", and all the other "creature feature" movies I loved as a kid (along with the beach party movies), the kind of stories that both Horror film and print/e-books have been missing for too long. I'm now looking forward to No. 3 with considerably less doubt.
Just a fun old fashioned horror story! Characters you can identify with, a plot you can believe. Before long, you’re rooting for the good guys, who can’t possibly win. You’re looking for every opportunity for them to uncover that one piece that gives them a chance! It’s why you read horror!!
Book 2, The Kraken of Cape Madre, switches the main character from a Texas guy to Miriam. This threw me at first, since she was basically just a side character in the first book with no POV, but it works for the series, and she becomes the main protagonist for most of the series. Miriam, her cousin, and her best friend are on vacation on the Texas Gulf coast, and a giant octopus appears. Again, the author takes everything you think you've figured out about the story, tells you you're right, and then takes it further with a similar twist to what he did in the first book. The plot is good, but it's the characters that have me giving this book 5 stars. Miriam is very real, from her on-the-spectrum-ish behavior instilled in her by her obsessive, narcissistic father, to her guilt-ridden PTSD earned in the last book. Even without the enjoyable sci-fi/fantasy/thriller/horror elements, I'd keep reading just to tag along on her adventures and watch her growth.
This is the second book in the Lore Stalker Series and it is the best one yet. The author did another fantastic job with coming up with a great plot, kept the story moving along at just the right pace and then finished the book with a really great ending that made me wanting more books out of the series. Since this is the second book in the series, I have a better appreciation of what this author is capable above, and, I must say I plan on reading everything in the Lore Stalker series from here on out. I'm hooked. The characters are deep and meaningful and you feel attached to them, even more so now since this is obviously part of a wider story arc. I love seeing how Miriam, Macy, and Tanner are all developing along with their idiosyncrasies which make them even more human and more interesting. The Lore Stalker series reminds me of all those Michael Crichton books I tore through as a teenager and it's easy to see why. Each story and creature starts out mystical but then is quickly explained by science as the characters find out more about the creature's origins, and, I have to say I really love that. I've been looking for books like Michael Crichton's and I think I found just the series.
The Kraken of Cape Madre was a fast-paced book I did not want to put down, but hated when I finished it, because I just wanted more Lorestalker books to read by JP Barnett. It is extremely well written with clues along the way that you only see in retrospect - the best kind of suspense/mystery/horror thriller (I think it truly sits in all 3 genres). The characters are well-developed, but the book is full of action - a somewhat difficult feat to accomplish. I am very impressed with how I can love and empathize with some of the characters, while also hating their cruel actions, which explains itself in an unexpected twist! All in all a great read, and I can't wait to read the next book in the series! Keep them coming!
