This book is tough and necessary. It explains the real-life effect the modern world of porn is having upon males the world over.
Chapter 1 lays to rest the comforting lie that "modern porn is harmless". Evidence is provided for the range of effects modern porn has upon males. These range from "reduced grey matter in the brain", "no interest in real women", social isolation, actual mental health issues and rates of Erectile Disfunction in modern young men similar to those of men over 60 in previous generations.
Chapter 2 Looks into the actual brain science and studies related to porn use across the world. It covers the mechanism and chemicals involved with the "reward circuits". It shows how the effects are worse for younger men without sexual experience who have effectively formed mental reward circuits that are incapable of proper sexual function. Recovery time for these young men can be up to 12 months and can involve some real low points that have be lived through until the brain rewires itself properly.
Chapter 3: How to recover. The book outlines that the only solution to problems created by online porn is to desist from porn. This section contains many tips and stories from recovered users.
In terms of a reading guide, Chapter 1 contains the material necessary to assess if you have been negatively affected or could be negatively affected in the future. This is a fairly straight forward section. Chapter 2 which explains the effect of porn upon the brains reward mechanisms and chemicals is tougher to get through. If necessary, this section could be skim read initially and referred back to when you are ready to absorb the specific detail of the science. Chapter 3 is the easiest part of the book it provides easy to understand behaviours and habits.
After reading this book, I am going to be having some very serious and strong conversations with a few younger men in the extended family. Poor them...
