3.0 out of 5 starssince when was 62 an OLD LADY!!
24 January 2013
Format: Kindle EditionVerified Purchase
I can only assume that the writer is a teenager! This Granny is frequently referred to as an Old Lady and she is only in her early 60'S for goodness sake!!
Miss Marple on steroids...no, a much younger lady actually!!
Since most of us are still working at this age I dont get the fact that everyone in the village over the age of 50 is retired and refered to as old.
There were some amusing ideas, but not many.
I did read it all, but I do have to say that it was more a task than a pleasure, and really, please dont have people of this age written off as old. Its insulting and stupid to do so.
Some issues with formatting and spelling as well that grate on the nerves somewhat.
I think the writer does show some promise though, but needs to spend more time on the work and get a broader outlook on life!

5.0 out of 5 starsMiss Marple in Wales- love it :)

I was brought up on Miss Marple. I loved the idea of an old lady solving cases through sheer nosiness and this is a modern day version.
It starts with a murder at the Village Fete. Unfortunately for the murder, she happens to be Granny Smith's next door neighbour and when the poor husband of the victim is arrested, Granny Smith leaps on her bike into action. With a surveillance team comprising of long suffering husband and gay son, she is on the case!!
A lovely easy read and a good plot- a real winner :)

4.0 out of 5 stars"One apple that improves with age"

Let's dispel one misapprehension, okay? Granny Smith is nothing like Miss Marple and G.M. Dobbs is nothing like Agatha Christie. Having said that, this is fun to read. The Welsh elements, the humour, the familiar characters and a well-developed plot combine to produce a better than average cozy mystery. What more could you ask for? Apart from the next in the series?

2.0 out of 5 starsNot Miss Marple, no,no, no.

described as Miss Marple on steroids...I don't think Miss Marple would slap people and make racist comments even if she was on a different medication altogether. Has a similar attitude to Terry Pratchett's Granny Weatherwax (isn't that a type of apple as well??) but not in the same league at all for me. Got rid of it after just one chapter

Wonderful! Reminds me of my mother. An outspoken, senior rebel who seeks to clear up the mystery she finds herself in. A simply delightful character who had me chuckling whilst she dealt with the clues surrounding her. An example of the best cozies around.

5.0 out of 5 starsA Delightful & Amusing tale

The eccentric Welsh pensioner gets her teeth (usually gripping a corn-cob pipe) into solving the mysterious murder of a friend in the village. Despite being ignored and warned off by the police, she persists. This delightful short story makes great family reading with plenty of humour. I can just imagine a nice TV comedy series from this.

3.0 out of 5 starsNot a bad book

I got this as a free download for my newly acquired Kindle as it's not the kind of thing I would normally buy.
A heavy metal listening, pipe smoking, non-nonsense granny (who isn't really that old) who gets involved in crime solving in a welsh village, what more could you need?!
The storyline, although a standard crime story, was enjoyable and filled out with some likeable characters (notably Dai Twice the local special constable and Arthur, Granny Smiths husband, who every husband can relate to on some level) but was let down in places by the editing and spelling.

All in all and enjoyable read that kept me entertained with plenty of giggles thrown in. Can't wait for Granny's next adventure!
