I was a bit wary about trying a thriller with a political theme, as it's not usually what I enjoy. However this book was surprisingly to my taste, probably because the politics are well mixed in with other threads such as friendship and loyalty. The characters are interesting and quite well-developed on the whole. The plot line has enough changes of direction to keep the readers' attention throughout and a satisfying conclusion means that the reader is not left feeling disappointed in the end. A very accomplished first novel, I would say!
This is a seriously good book that is all the more amazing for being the author's first. Although almost all the characters are to some degree stock items - the ex marine - the computer whizz - the insidious ,ruthless, mysterious assassin - the successful but rotten politician - the super fit ex CIA deadly beauty - the super efficient ex LAPD agent and more but all skilfully crafted into a thrilling morality tale . There is one solid thread about what happened to the missing teenage daughter of the politician? and this is set against the question of how far from the path of virtue will (a) man let his ambition take him ?. Many books of this ilk fall into the simplistic view that all American Politicians are corrupt scumbags whereas, although this one is, his duplicity is known to only a very few people. I did plump for five stars as I found it very compelling reading, but there were one or two loose ends that were not cleared up, which, after the tense main story ending my mind wandered off thinking what became of this or that person, who were very involved in the story throughout, then vanished without explanation.
I enjoyed this book a lot. Lots of action and the different agendas of each group. The reason for the title does become clear until about 80-90% of the way through the book. Neither does which side is fighting for what. Politics, child abduction, mysterious characters and a lot of different motives keep you reading. The nasty but efficient hit man, who plans so far ahead that you have to admire that ability, is a scarey guy to put it mildly. I never reveal endings, so read this book and enjoy it. Might just have to check out the next in this set too.
This is one of the 1st books to grab me from the start. The entire plot comes right from what could be a Hollywood blockbuster with intriguing plots and engaging characters that keeps the story going. The author puts a vulnerability in the main character and supporting players. A brilliant first novel and am already wanting to read the next.
This book has been on my kindle for a while now and I've kept overlooking it in order to read something else. I think it's because this is described as a political thriller which rather put me off, anything to do with politics is most definitely not top of my reading list. Also a theme of computer hacking tends to put me off too, being a complete and utter technophobe I find all the technical jargon hard going. So it was a spell in hospital that prompted me to get stuck into this book and the fact I had little else to choose from! It did take a while to get into but boy am I glad I keep going, it's a cracker of a book. Tight and clever plot, likeable and believable characters and a ten year old mystery to unravel. Terrifically well written, cleverly crafted and fast paced. Highly recommended
I am giving this book 4 stars but I must say I enjoyed over 90 per cent of it. I was well impressed with it as the authors first novel and was gripped. The only reasons I am not giving it a 4 star are these 1)I worked out the twist/s early on . 2)The ending was terrible. It is hard to explain without giving a spoiler but the way people acted/reacted was not plausible. 3)The role of a particular character (and again I cannot say who due to not wanting to spoil things for readers), unless I was missing something, was not explained. Despite this I felt the book was marvellous In praise, unlike many, the book had no continuity errors or grammatical mistakes and unlike some kindle books we had pages as well as location points.
This was recommended to me by Amazon and I am so pleased that it was. The story is complicated and very involving but the writer builds up the characters so that you get to understand them very well. There are enough twists and turns to keep any conspiracy theorist happy. The basic outline is of a girl who was 'kidnapped' a decade before and her Godmother has decided she wants more information about it, or so you think. Any more details would ruin the book and I would encourage you to read if you have any doubts about what some people will do to get power and keep it. There are enough loose ends for another book that I hope the Author is already considering. I will be looking forward to it.
The Short Drop is a new type of book for me since it contains a large amount of technical materials related to computers. The good thing is that the author gives the explanation of the what and wherefor so the reader can follow the action step by step. It is a little confusing at the beginning when all the characters are introduced but eventually the frame is cleared and the action follows nice and easy. This was Matthew FitzSimmons first book. I am looking forward to his next one.
