I have listened to and read all four of the books in the Bino series at least three times. They are smart, drop dead funny and easily feature the best quit witted banter in the mystery genre. In fact, I put his work right up there with Jo Nesbo's Harry Hole series, Alders-Olson's Department Q and Stephen King's Mr Mercedes series. This is the last book in the series and just as great as each of its predecessors. It was written in 1988.
Keeping that date in mind, the author's description reads, "AW Gray has played poker at Binnions World Championships and driven to South America with golf superstar Lee Trevino..." In fact, Gray actually sponsored Trevino in his first professional tournament in the 60's. They were best friends and Trevino is portrayed as Bino's best friend Barney the golf pro. He was a professional gambler and even served 4 years in federal prison where he wrote several novels. (He always claimed his innocence on mail fraud charges. Regardless of whether that was the case, the FBI certainly spent alot of energy over a victimless crime. He is a master of irony. His experiences in federal courts, of course, lend an air of authenticity to his work.
So do yourself a favor and buy or listen to any of the works of AW Gray.
