Pirate stew, pirate stew, pirate stew for me and you. The children were undeniably sceptical and understandably so but it was an adventure of chaos, pirates, flying houses and parents out for dinner. I loved this book it drew you in and was amazingly illustrated. A fun read for all ages!!

As a fan of Neil Gaiman's sci-fi/fantasy/other-world-ly writing and a lover of children's books with beautiful illustrations and strong storylines, I was really looking forward to this book. It definitely did not disappoint. The rhymes feel good, the story is charming and quirky, the illustrations are vibrant and lively -- I can see it being a great book for parents to read to their children. I also love that the book is large enough to feel big for young children (there's something about opening up a big hardcover book and having to use your full arm length to turn the pages when you're still small) and the full-page glorious illustrations tingle all your visual senses.
After I received my copy, I got a second one to send as a Christmas gift to my niece. She's still a little too young to understand all the words, but I think it'll be a good book to expand her vocabulary through a fun narrative. Hopefully her parents will do a silly pirate voice for the Chef! :)

Cute story and beautifully drawn art. Sort of a Spelljammer faerie tale for today. Pirate stew! Pirate Stew!
My boy is going to love it as a xmas gift I believe. Some of his favorite stories are by Neil and Charles Vess so he is used to the writing style and I hope he likes Chris Riddell's art which I think is fantastic and fantastical. It is full of color and bright vivaciousness with a touch of caricature.
The book is oversized with really high quality color retention paper with hard and thick covers. It is long enough to be a single book to read in a night without having to dip into two books.

Not even close to Gaiman’s standard quality. This book is dashed off and reads like an abridged version of a longer take replete with missing information. The illustrations are all group portraits with the white characters in multicultural costumes making the same expression, page after page. Disappointing.
