Although these books are fairly well written two problems arise. Not sure how accurate some of the historical background is (doctors, post mortem,) everyone having a description of their calling - Ranulf the priest, Baldwin the doctor - and the tales are very similar. This is one of the drawbacks in reading a series.
I haven't read anything of Edward Marston before and it's a great introduction- excellent core of regular characters - looking to put right disputes from the commissioners original recording of the Domesday book ,though it never quite goes to plan! Fascinating insight into claimants petitioning land rights!
A great way to enjoy this period of history reading such well written book. You feel as if you are present. My aim is to read the whole series. Thank You Mr. Marston for helping me to 'escape'
Without fail, irrespective of which series he writes, each storyline is brilliant with the main characters keeping to their characters and resulting in a good finale. I did guess about the priest quite early on but it didn't detract from the enjoyment!
This is another brilliantly crafted story that is a great addition to the series. This is another set of mysteries that the royal commission needs to solve before being able to complete their task of presiding over land disputes.
If you like mysteries and English history,as I do, you'll enjoy reading Marston's novels set during the years following the Norman Conquest. Each novel takes place in a different county in England. They read almost like a travelogue. But there's also a baffling mystery to be solved--such fun! This sixth novel in the Domesday Chronicles involves murder, horse theft, an attempted assassination of a Catholic bishop and attempted rape--quite a lot of action and scoundrels to suspect. I'm ready for the next novel in the series.
