About this listen

Summerhills continues the story of the lives and loves of the Ayrton family, in particular that of Major Roger Ayrton M.C., his brother, and three young half-sisters.

Roger has made the Army his career. Anne has settled down as housekeeper to old Mr Orme, the rector. Nell looks after the old house, and it is upon her that the comfort and well-being of the family depend.

A new generation is growing up. The story begins as Roger flies home to Amberwell on leave, full of plans for his family and home.

Any additional comments?

What can anyone say about D.E.Stevenson? Her writing is a nostalgic, gentle, glimpse of a vanished world that still existed in the 20th century, yet must seem incomprehensible to those who have known nothing but internet based high speed lives. I think it's so hard to describe precisely because it is so near in time, and not yet 'history' in the way Dickens and Heyer novels are accepted. Summerhills, the follow up to Amberwell, is a quiet relaxing listen, never wildly exciting, but comforting as an occasional alternative to faster paced stories. Of the 2 novels, Amberwell was better, but Lesley Mackie read both beautifully.

A snapshot of a slower, gentler time

I discovered the writings of this author a while ago and like her straightforward way of telling her stories. They are a reflection of the times in which she lived but can be quite gritty and down to earth. The narrator did a superb job and made listening an even more pleasurable experience. Highly recommended.

Nice old fashioned story beautifully narrated

Existing readers of D.E. Stevenson will already know that her writing of family stories are rich in characters and settings, ranging from Victorian to post-war times. Always absorbing and with an emphasis on family values, this book is a great example of a style of writing now out of fashion. She wrote with a direct simplicity and just 'tells a story' that keeps you engrossed and wanting to find out more. Relax and enjoy this gentle family story.

A charming tale
