Gaelan Starfire is a farmer, happy to be a husband and a father; a careful, quiet, simple man. He's also an immortal, peerless in the arts of war. Over the centuries, he's worn many faces to hide his gift, but he is a man ill-fit for obscurity, and all too often he's become a hero, his very names passing into legend: Acaelus Thorne, Yric the Black, Hrothan Steelbender, Tal Drakkan, Rebus Nimble.

But when Gaelan must take a job hunting down the world's finest assassins for the beautiful courtesan-and-crimelord Gwinvere Kirena, what he finds may destroy everything he's ever believed in.

Although I did not enjoy this book as much as the Night angel trilogy I did find it to be a very good listen. The book outlines a lot of things overlooked in the series and fills gaps in the timeline. a must read if you are a fan of the night angel series.

Having already read the entire night angel trilogy, I was greatly anticipating this prelude, it perfectly ties up loose ends from the past, such as the rise of the mistress of pleasures and Durzo Blint's past lives and names as well as his training to be a wet boy by Scarred Wrabble. The story of Jorsin Alkestes is also played upon greatly giving you an insight into the mind and actions of the most powerful magician that ever lived. the way the story is retold by Durzo telling the young man of his life. A very punchy (lasting just over 2 hours) and worthy read or listen gripped me from start to finish, perfect for anyone who enjoys a fantasy novel.

I have loved this novella since I first read it. having it here too for only £2 is a no-brainer. A superbly written snippet of back story from my favourite trilogy. I bought it today and listened to it 3 times at work already. BUY IT NOW!!!!

he should have narrated the whole trilogy
