Omnius has been hiding a lot from the people of Avilon. The war with the Sythians is not what we thought, but that raises the question: if not the Sythians, then what did Omnius go to fight in the Getties Cluster? Omnius knows what people will do before they do it. He predicts citizens' behavior, and, some suspect, he even makes those predictions come true.

The first interstellar war, a generation ago, left humanity enslaved. Now humans fight in the armies of their masters to save themselves from annihilation. At least, that's what the propaganda insists is true. What the layers of lies keep hidden is how badly the new war is going for the people of earth. Now it's Dylan Kane's turn to blast into the heavens and join the battle, but what his masters don't know is that by putting a weapon in his hands, they're giving him the key to unlocking his hopes of freedom.

Technological advances at the end of the 25th century seeded the foundation for humankind's Golden Age of Peace. However, eager to rid themselves of an ancient galactic secret, the Kryth Mahr Domain entered the Sol system and massacred billions, unleashing a horrific wave of genocidal fire that nearly extinguished the existence of man. This is pure marine corp territory. I had just gotten into all the characters in the first book, when, wham, life moved forward 7 years and I was adrift in a sea of new faces.

The Captain (couldn't make out if his name was Kyle or ......?) was, in my opinion, not a very likeable character and I did not warm to him at all - too much of a cut-throat mercenary. However, this might change in the next book. Will have to wait and see.

I was sad to see Rex go; I thought he deserved better. But, there you go.

This first book was a bit of a mix, so it will be interesting to see what the second book brings.

The narration by R C Bray did, as usual, bring the whole book alive with his spot on narration.

This is a very easy to listen to and enjoyable sci-fi series and is no slouch when it comes to the action.

In the three years since former fleet officer Rob Geary and former marine Mele Darcy led improvised forces to repel attacks on the newly settled world of Glenlyon, tensions have only gotten worse. When one of Glenlyon's warships is blown apart trying to break the blockade that has isolated the world from the rest of human-colonized space, only the destroyer Saber remains to defend it from another attack. Geary's decision to take Saber to the nearby star Kosatka to safeguard a diplomatic mission is a risky interpretation of his orders, to say the least.
