Maybe I am being a bit harsh on this one . . . there is a decent story in here. The rationale that is drawn for the incursion of the Predators is act..Show More »ually clever and unexpected. There are some good action scenes and a couple of very powerful scenes. One involving a young girl called Luciana is particularly moving.
However, there were problems for me. Rather than being a story centered on these iconic monsters of Sci-fi it felt like one that merely used them as the monsters it required for the plot. In addition the narration is good for the most part but the very strong, tough female characters at the centre of the story were made to sound very “girlie” by both the dialogue and the voicing - sorry there must be a better word or phrase than “girlie” but I can’t think of another one that says quite what I mean.
What I really missed though is feeling the sense of dread of the aliens or the predators. It just wasn’t there for me and more time should have been spent stirring that up rather than the back story about the Founders. I will say that the scene set for the second book seems promising and it’s very possible that this will be a series that picks up momentum as it goes on. It could be that if I accept the role that the predators and aliens have been given which is a subservient one I’ll enjoy it more, but sadly I’m not completely sold on it yet.
Like a satellite in a decaying orbit I felt pulled back to this series despite my misgivings over the first book. I’m obviously more tuned in now bec..Show More »ause I really, really enjoyed this one. It’s classic space opera with much action and some truly macabre moments. The scene in the drainage tunnel of the Alien ship is particularly gut wrenching – you’ll know the one when you get to it! It’s scenes like that which capture some of the claustrophobic tension of the early Alien films and really raised this book up to a five star billing.
The misgivings that I mentioned reviewing the previous book didn’t completely go away but, and I have to admit this, they really didn’t stop me enjoying this one at all. The narration of the female characters seemed to pick up a little and now that I am more used to the role of the monsters I’m getting into it. The back story works well and the plot is very fast-moving with lots and lots of action.
Of course this is a series so we’re kept waiting for the conclusion until the final part. Don’t let that put you off, there is lots of action in this and the plot does develop at a cracking pace. There are a few new characters who add to the depth of the story and develop additional sub-plots of their own. We are left at the end with everything perfectly poised for a final cataclysmic war to decide humanity's fate.
So, despite my misgivings I think this is a cracker of a sci-fi action book and I shall certainly be completing this series!
