I thoroughly enjoy Grisham's books and was looking forward to this one, even though I knew it was a children's book.
The plot is slow and..Show More » unexciting, with no real sense of conclusion. Whilst I appreciate it is a children's book, the level of exposition is far too high and treats its audience like dimwits e.g. going as far as to explain what a judge is.
The characters are shallow and unbelievable, a class of 13 year old boys who show no intererst in girls and don't have cell phones? Or the main character who is far too perfect for a boy his age, or the fact that this is a state school that has classes of 16 children per class.
As a set up for a sequel there is some promise, the potential intrigue around Theo's uncle and the roll over from this story possibly.
I'll give the next book a chance, but to be honest, based on this Grisham should stick to adult fiction.
I made the mistake in thinking that this would be a full-length book as it is "unabridged" and the many John Grisham books I've so far listened to (an..Show More »d enjoyed) are all a lengthy listen. However, this book is a pared-down, simple story not a bit like the author's usual intricately plotted page-turners. I was even more disappointed because the narrator read the book at break-neck speed with little attempt give the characters different voices. If you're a fan of this author I'd recommend that you give this book a miss.
Ah, you've stolen my headline review sentence. I've only listened to the first three in this series, and you do need to listen to book one to get the..Show More » beginning and end references in this book. However, in terms of plot and pace, this one ticks a lot of boxes. You really root for Theodore. It's his turn to be in the hot seat and things get tricky for him personally. Usually, he's acting on behalf of someone else. This time it's Theo that's "in the dock".Where does it rank overall? I've got more than 50 to compare it with, but, it will be one that I will re-listen to, which marks it out as better quality than most.
