Sandra Balzo has a fun, quirky style to her writing, matching the voice work of Karen Savage perfectly keeping the story bright and full of life even ..Show More »during its darker and grittier moments. As a fan of Agatha Christie and Rex Stout myself, I feel much of what made their writing great is present here while still having a unique voice that engages on an emotive level as well as a reasoning one. the mystery is rich enough to keep you guessing while at the same time the solution makes sense and seems well foreshadowed in hindsight. I have read and enjoyed a number of other books featuring the intrepid Maggie Thorson but this is my first audio book featuring her and I must admit the performance of Karen Savage made a great experience even better and I will be listening to more by them both.
another really enjoyable Maggie Thorson mystery from the great team of Sandra Balzo and Karen Savage. Karen captures the characters with great vo..Show More »ice work and brings the first person narration to life. she is the perfect voice for the lead. for her part, Sandra Balzo has crafted yet another well paced mystery with twists and turns, wrapping everything up neatly by the end without ever making the mystery too obvious while still piling on the wit, charm and character we have come to expect from her work. I wasn't helped here by the fact I am listening out of order which made a few things obvious by what I know from future stories, but I can't hold that against the writing. the characters feel fleshed out and three dimensional and many go through well crafted and logical growths a great story well told by writer and performer.
A big claim to make in that headline, but how else do you describe a busybody detective in a story with twists and turns a plenty, where every charact..Show More »er is hiding something and there are plenty of false trails to follow.
The wit and humour in the story is perfectly captured by both Balzo and Savage, as is the drama and tension, long may these two continue their working relationships over Maggie Thorson
this is my second audio adventure with the Maggie Thorson character and my fourth overall, and I must admit to still loving her style of writing and t..Show More »he wit it uses. I find her comparable to other favourites of mine Rex Stout and Agatha Christie. if you are looking for a hard edged, gritty and dark story you may have to look elsewhere, but this is the sort of murder filled romp with plenty charms and twists for those after something a little lighter. it helps that it has well rounded characters who are both likable and interesting. Though I will say I did find this a slightly weaker mystery than others, working out the killer quickly, but the twists kept my interest. The narration is excellent, easy to listen to and a perfect match for the tone of the novel. I am already looking forward to the next time I enjoy the pairing of Sandra Balzo and Karen Savage for another Maggie Thorson mystery
