Don't be fooled by talk of physics, The Lost Fleet; Dauntless book 1 is pure space opera. You've got good guys, bad guys and plenty of battles and th..Show More »ings blowing up. And don't forget the love interest (ok you do have to wait to book 2 buts its fairly obvious). The premis of the book is fairly simple - the Alliance fleet was suckered into a trap and badly mauled. All the leaders have been murdered and it up to a hero to save the day. The book is exciting and well paced. The physics of space travel are fairly consistant and true to life from what i remember of the subject. On the negative side, the way the book and author goes on about it can grate at times, after all the author didn't seem to mind making up the faster than light stuff, so why preach? The only other main flaw, to my mind, was that i found it hard to believe that a military force would lose it capability to use tactics. That aside, its well worth a listen to.
The lost fleet book 2 is an interesting and engaging listen, even if at one point you can hear one of the voice actors drop the script.?
..Show More »Without giving away too much of the story line, the author manages to continue the all out action space battles seen in the first novel while continuing to expand on the subplots and themes i.e. What would a centry of all out war do to the people that fight it? Power, greed and temptation and the introduction of an anti-hero in this book also helps highlight the dual nature of the human soul... Can someone be both Good and evil??
As a long standing fan of SiFi and military novels both current and historical this series seems to be shaping up well of particular note is the way the author handles the Physic and mathematics required to wage war within a truly 4D environment (3D releativty) Jack Campbell includes just enough so the we get a feel for the complexities without grinding the book to a halt going through formulas and equations.
The only con with this audiobook is it's length, at a little under 10 hours it is rather short however, given the fact that I couldn't stop listening the length was probably a good thing... Otherwise i might never of made it to work.?
They annoy me because the protagonist is wearing Mary Sue's favorite earrings.
They ..Show More »annoy me because the author spells everything out very, very very clearly. So clearly it feels like I'm being bashed over the head with clearly. I'd describe the writing as 'military' - point this end toward enemy. Yes, I know.
They annoy me because of the plodding repetition including but not limited to: -IT'S BLACKJACK! The Famous Hero! Break out the bunting! -the physics of the solar system sized battlefield -DON'T BE BLACKJACK! He can do anything he wants! That's a BAD THING(tm) -the consequences of the self sustaining war of attrition in which the Alliance and the Syndics are engaged leads to the consequences of the self sustaining war of attrition leads to the... -Oh ANCESTORS, WE NEED BLACKJACK! -the physics of the solar system sized battlefield -BLACKJACK! It's even a medical term now, y'know. -the going on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on about honor -YES, BUT WHAT WOULD BJ DO? -those darn auxiliaries getting us in trouble again... but we NEED them dammit. -YOU NEED TO BE BLACKJACK! -and let's not forget the physics of that battlefield...
And they annoy me because: - despite all of that, the actual fleet engagements (especially in this book) are tense enough to have me on the edge of my seat. And to be fair these rely entirely on a firm grasp of (yes, yes, you may have a point) the physics of the solar system sized battlefield. - the honorable sacrifices are kept simple enough to have an impact - the books are short enough that the repetition doesn't kill you - intriguing hints of SPOILER :-p.
Having now heard this last Book of the lost fleet,All i can say is 'Please Sir can i have some more'. I love the Audio versions of the these books.
