Being a massive Jo Nesbo fan, I have been waiting eagerly for the first book in the Harry Hole series to be translated into English. Having loved ever..Show More »yNesbo novel so far, I approached The Bat with high expectations. I am pleased to say that I was not disappointed. Not yet the fully formed character, many of Harry Hole's skills and flawes ar soon on show. The reader is able to see how the author developed Harry into the more mature complex person that he becomes in later books.
Strangely the first book in the series is set out of Harry's native Norway. A young Norwegian woman is Murdered in Sydney and Harry travels to Australia to liase witth the local police. All the usual Nesbo plot complexities are soon on show. The story builds up to a great ending, a typical trait of all Nesbo's thrillers. Had I read this book before any of his later novels, I would have immediately looked for the rest of the series. Just one more book to be translated, Cockroaches I believe is to be published in the English language sometime in2013. It does not really matter which order you read The Harry Holes books, Just read them!.
First audiobook I have heard from Jo Nesbo, and it won't be my last. Persevere with the initial stories of the Eastern front, it does all come togethe..Show More »r at a thrilling end. I look forward to hearing more about Inspector Harry Hole. I enjoyed the story and the narration. Not quite a Stig Larson story, but does merit comparison.
You absolutely know that Harry will come through for you but along the way he will take you on a roller coaster ride of mistakes, bad judgement, wrong..Show More » turns and the odd bender. This all makes for a riveting read and you find yourself doing the literary equivalent of shouting at the television! Harry......what are you doing? Harry Hole is one of the most interesting characters I have met (read). In real life you would wonder how he gets by and yet Jo Nesbo writes in such a way that he is so 'real' you think perhaps you are missing something and that maybe this is the way to be. As a hero he has many faults but you cannot help but admire the inner voice that somehow keeps him on the straight and narrow. The story is deftly paced, building twists and turns into the plot with effortless ease. I find myself waiting for the next story and dare I say it the inevitable screenplay. Now there's a question - who would you want to play Harry?
This is the conclusion to Nesbo's trilogy, following on from The Redbreast and Nemesis. Detective Harry Hole is once again investigating a series of ..Show More »complex murders. On this case he is teamed up with a colleague that Harry believes is a corrupt killer. In the earlier books in the trilogy Harry has failed to prove his fellow detectives guilt.
This book has complex characters, wonderfully placed in bizarre and life threatening situations. Nesbo has the gift of making the reader feel uneasy in every chapter. The authors words are brought to life by narrater Sean Barrett, who never fails to add something special.
The book builds to a crescendo, I was unable to stop listening and felt disappointed when it had to end.
One of Jo Nesbo's best.
After listening to the millenium series lost for what next to fill the hole - this and the snowman are equal in my eyes. Simpler storyline and easier ..Show More »to follow but not to the books discredit. Unable to stop and think Lisbeth Salander should work with Harry! Redeemer first if in doubt. Brilliant - more please!
I hadn't read anything by Jo Nesbo before. What a find! The story keeps you guessing all the way through, some parts were too scary to listen to in th..Show More »e dark. Excellent narration by Sean Barrett brings the story alive. Best audiobook so far.
This is the first audiobook I got when I signed up to Audible.
So I wasn't sure what to expect, but I absolutely loved it! The story is gripping..Show More », with interwoven plot lines. A classic who-dunnit, with modern day themes. I couldn't stop listening to it. On the way to work, at work (during my more mundane tasks!), on the way home, in the evening.... I think it took me a week to get through, so addictive.
I also love the narrator's voice and intonation. He lulls you into the story as easily as if you were reading. He does different character's voices quite well too. I have no experience with narrators, but I thought this guy was perfect.
Very highly recommend!
I have loved all the Harry Hole books - more so because of Sean Barrett's audio versions. The Phantom sees Harry return from Hong Kong to recapture..Show More » his old life, but another story unfolds we see the return of some other familiar characters. For me this book brings us full circle, and it starts to show hope and then the familiar despair within Harry's character and life. I finished the book two weeks ago. I have not stopped thinking about it and it has had a lasting effect. The depth of characters and the interweaving of storyline cements Jo Nesbo as one of the great crime writers. Highly recommended.
