She loves her life and her friendship with the young goatherd, Peter. But one terrible day her aunt takes her to the city to help take care of a sickly child, Clara. Heidi can't bear to be away from her grandfather and finally, she brings Clara back to her Alpine home, where a miracle of healing occurs.

First published in 1881, the subtitle of this book tells us that it was written “for children and those who love children”. Heidi, a 5-year-old orphan, is handed off by her young Aunt Dete to live with her grandfather in the Swiss Alps. Though her new life is foreign, Heidi soon falls in love with her grandfather, and he with her. They share a contented life of goat-herding. But when Grandfather refuses to allow Heidi to attend school in the small village below, quarrels ensue.

Heidi who has been orphaned, is taken from her alpine home with her beloved grandfather by her less than loving aunt to be a companion for a crippled child of a wealthy family in Frankfurt. They become bosom friends but Heidi becomes ill and has to return home, but when her crippled friend comes to the Alps for a visit, well, we don't want to spoil the story for you.

La storia racconta di come Heidi, una bambina di cinque anni, orfana e priva di qualsiasi istruzione, venga allevata sulle montagne svizzere, e sia poi costretta a confrontarsi con una realtà cittadina, che, pur nella sofferenza, le darà il dono di apprendere la lettura e di credere in Dio.

Das kleine Mädchen Heidi verbringt mit ihrem Großvater auf einer abgelegenen Hütte ihre ersten Lebensjahre. Der Großvater wird sehr traurig, als Heidi mit ihrem Vormund, der Tante Dete, nach Frankfurt ziehen muss. Dort lebt Heidi im Haus des Witwers Sesemann als Spielkameradin für dessen gelähmte Tochter Klara. Heidi erkrankt jedoch vor Heimweh und muss auf Anraten des Arztes zu ihrem Großvater zurückgeschickt werden.
