Now firmly ensconced in the sleepy Yorkshire village of Darrowby, recently qualified vet James Herriot has acclimatised to life with his unpredictable colleagues, brothers Siegfried and Tristan Farnon. But veterinary practice in the 1930s was never going to be easy, and there are challenges on the horizon, from persuading his clients to let him use his 'modern' equipment, to becoming an uncle (to a pig called Nugent).

As a life-long James Herriot fan, I am familiar with the stories, the anecdotes, the ebb and flow of life in this Yorkshire community but I am very pleased with the way that Christopher Timothy brings each of the characters to life!

In James Herriot's fourth volume of superb memoirs the Yorkshire Dales are smiling on him. He now has a lovely wife by his side, a partner's plate on the gate and the usual menagerie of farm animals, pets and owners. Meanwhile, Siegfried is thrashing around the practice, Tristan is (occasionally) buckling down to his finals and James is signed up for a local cricket team.

    Story

By now, we know the characters, usually how the stories will be told and the probable outcomes! But you know what? You still can't help yourself from listening and listening and then smiling! James Herriot presents uncanny observations of others but is so unaware of himself that you just have to adore his descriptive life in Yorkshire! Can't wait to get stuck into the next one!

My long drives back and forth across the UK are a pleasure whilst listening to these classics. I get wrapped up in the fantastic story lines - the classic characters - and the irrepressible Christopher Timothy who brings these stories to life! Thoroughly enjoyable!

For more than 25 years, James Herriot captivated millions of readers and TV viewers with tales of the triumphs, disasters, pride and sometimes heartache that filled his life as a vet. This is the first volume of his memoirs.

    Story

This series never gets old. The characters, the settings, and story lines are well conceived and expertly delivered. Christopher Timothy makes this first book of the series extremely welcome listening. His characters come to life and you start to recognise the voices as you continue to listen.
I travel a lot and usually listen to a variety of audio and radio productions but have found this unabridged story a wonderful change. The time and miles just fly by.
This would have received a 5-star rating and deservedly so, however one little niggle. There were only 31 chapters in this book and that is how the audio is broken down, so if I missed a piece by being on the telephone or stopping for fuel, I had to start the chapter again and that could take me back 15 to 20 minutes in the story.
