Fanatical about cricket since he was a boy, Miles Jupp would do anything to see his heroes play. But perhaps deciding to bluff his way into the press corps during England's Test series in India wasn't his best idea. By claiming to be the cricket correspondent for BBC Scotland and getting a job with the (Welsh) Western Mail, Miles lands the press pass that will surely be the ticket to his dreams. Soon, he finds himself in cricket heaven - drinking with David Gower and Beefy, and sharing bar room banter with Nasser Hussain.

I know absolutely nothing about cricket and wouldn't have read this as a book but I adore Miles Jupp so I wanted to hear this as he is reading it himself.
It is more than just a cricket book- it is a hilarious listen as he goes through his love of the game and the journey, both actual and spiritual, he takes to what he thinks is going to be his dream job.
    An absolute hoot!

Bleak Expectations' recounts the remarkable adventures of young Pip Bin as he tries to repair his destroyed family and distinctly damaged life, aided by his best friend Harry Biscuit and definitely not aided by his cruel and ironically named guardian Mr Gently Benevolent and his accomplices, the fearsome Hardthrasher siblings.

I have to disagree with the previous review - I loved this and kept laughing out loud when listening to it on my breaks at work to much funny looks as they couldn't hear what I was as I was wearing earphones.

OK the series is better, but then most many voiced audiobooks are better than a reading, P.G Wodehouse for example, but I still enjoyed it and I thought the narration was very good, but I admit that no one can do Mr Benevolent's evil laugh like Anthony Head can.

If you are a fan or not of the series then try it anyway, what can you lose, apart from your dignity- see above!

The world-famous sleuth is back in this astounding 60-episode collection (many previously believed to have been lost) direct from the original radio broadcasts. Featuring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce, this collection contains nearly 30 hours of Old Time Radio broadcasting at its best. Digitally remastered from the original broadcast recordings, this amazing set is a true collector's item for Sherlock Holmes fans everywhere!

I was disappointed in this as the production values are quite poor. The episodes are in no order what so ever so the actors chop and change , the references to the next episode at the end of each make no sense and the sound isn't brilliant- I know they are old recordings but some episodes are unlistenable to through headphones. Some of the same episodes are available on Murder By Moonlight where the quality is better so I'd suggest you download that instead.

It's a shame as the stories and actors are great just let down by the reproduction efforts at PDQ.

It is November 1890 and London is gripped by a merciless winter. Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson are enjoying tea by the fire when an agitated gentleman arrives unannounced at 221b Baker Street. He begs Holmes for help, telling the unnerving story of a scar-faced man with piercing eyes who has stalked him in recent weeks.

I admit I was worried about the idea of this as I love Conan Doyle and quite often other writers just spoil characters when they try to copy, but not in this case as Anthony Horowitz is clearly a fan and wouldn't dream of messing with something so great. So the book and story itself is great but you want to know what the audio is like!

I just adore Derek Jacobi as an actor and narrator and, with a small exception as to his "American Lady" voice, he really does do the book justice with his delivery, voice characterisation and the emotion especially as Watson discovers an horrific truth.

This has been one of my favourite audiobooks ever and I have listened to it more than once and will do so again.

In "The Worst Crime in the World", something is amiss at Musgrave Castle! In "The Insoluble Problem", Father Brown's best friend is a master thief who's been assigned the task of catching another thief. I have just discovered the Colonial Radio Theatre and their Father Brown Mysteries.
I just love them, this is the third volume I've had but I would like each collection to be longer so I can enjoy even more Father Brown!

I have tried to read this and gave up, so I thought I'd try and listen instead. It's an amazing production, the cast is fantastic as is the incidental music. During the main battle scene and towards the end- I won't give anything away- I had tears in my eyes. This is a must for your library.
