Set on the Western Front, in London and in Paris, My Dear I Wanted to Tell You is a moving and brilliant novel of love, class, and sex in wartime, and how war affects those left behind as well as those who fight.

What a wonderful read. I had to play truant this morning because I just could not part with the book. Touching story, perceptive thoughts, lovely written and beautifully read. It was one of the best books I read this year, if not the best.

I really looked forward to the 3rd sequel. I, therefore, downloaded it at once upon its release. But this book I hardly got into it, had to rewind again and again and when I eventually "worked" through it the end was so unexpected that I thought it was only the end of part 1 having missed the familiar "This book has been broken into multiple parts ...". Having said so the book comes up to its title.

Pepys Road: an ordinary street in the Capital. Each house has seen its fair share of first steps and last breaths, and plenty of laughter in between. Today, through each letterbox along this ordinary street drops a card with a simple message: We Want What You Have.

I downloaded the book because of all the good reviews it received in the media. And, yes, it is a fantastic listen, not only very interesting but most entertaining and well read too. One of the best books I listened to over the past months. A real treat.

In 1882, David Wildeblood, a 21-year-old from rural Norfolk, arrives in London to start work at the offices of a famous man. His job is to investigate the notorious slum of Somers Town, recording house by house the number of inhabitants, their occupations and standard of living. The deeper he penetrates the everyday squalor, the more appalled he is by mounting evidence that someone is making a profit from people's suffering. Passionate but reckless in his urge to uncover corruption, he soon finds his life in danger....

In general, I do not go for this kind of book. But this time I was intrigued by the good reviews the book got in the media. And I was not disappointed, in fact, pretty much the opposite. It was a fascinating listen I could hardly part with and left me with doing some research on workhouses etc. The Streets is novel in which history is artfully woven into the story and very well read.

Wentworth is today a crumbling and forgotten palace in Yorkshire. Yet just 100 years ago it was the ancestral pile of the Fitzwilliam's - an aristocratic clan whose home and life were fuelled by coal mining. This is the story of their spectacular decline: of inheritance fights; rumours of a changeling and of lunacy; philandering earls; illicit love; war heroism: a tragic connection to the Kennedy's; violent deaths: mining poverty and squalor; and a class war that literally ripped apart the local landscape.

This book stayed on my wish list quite a while because usually biographies & memoirs are not my thing. But having listened to it eventually I am very glad I did. It is a fascinating book. The story of one of the grand English families and its country house and the of the coal mining industry, nicely intertwined. And beautifully read. One of the best books I downloaded.

In this rich and memorable evocation of the fictional South Riding of Yorkshire are the lives, loves and sorrows of the central characters. There is Sarah Burton, fiery young headmistress; Robert Carne of Maythorpe Hall, a councillor tormented by his own disastrous marriage; Jo Astell, a socialist fighting poverty and his own illness; and Mrs Beddows, the first woman Alderman of the district (like Winifred's own mother).

I took me some time to get into it. But then I could hardly put down my earphones intrigued by the story as well as the wonderful listening. Probably not the book you like to read whilst roasting on the beach but being snuggled up on a sofa with a cup of tea and biscuits or a long journey you do not have to concentrate on the traffic.
