The brooding hero, gypsy Jake Lovell, under whose magic hands the most difficult horse or woman becomes biddable, is driven to the top by his loathing of the darling of the show ring, Rupert Campbell-Black. Having filched each other's horses, and fought and fornicated their way around the capitals of Europe, the feud between the two men finally erupts with devastating consequences at the Los Angeles Olympics.

If you read Jilly Cooper's classic Riders and loved it (who didn't - such a guilty pleasure) you will not be disappointed with the audio version. Beautifully read.

If you missed Jilly in the original format you must listen to this whilst appreciating it is of its time. And in its time (1980s) it was simply fabulous, and tittilating, and outrageous (I got most of my sex-ed from this book). It is certainly no feminist classic but it certainly liberated me ;) and most of my contemporaries. This is one bit of the '80s I welcome back with open arms.

Like previous reviewers I wait, impatiently, for the rest of the series. Please ask the publisher to hurry with Rivals I am almost at the end of Riders and I will suffer terribly having to wait.
