Peter Grant is learning magic fast. And it's just as well - he's already had run ins with the deadly supernatural children of the Thames and a terrifying killer in Soho. Progression in the police force is less easy, especially when you work in a department of two. A department that doesn't even officially exist. A department that if you did describe it to most people would get you laughed at.

Another great tale well narrated. The pace is good and it holds the interest to the end. Highly recommend all of Ben Aaronovitches books.

Death-row prisoners with nightmare pasts and no future.... Until they were selected for a secret experiment....to create something more than human.

Now they are the future and humanity's worst nightmare has begun. The Twelve is the epic sequel to The Passage. Read by Scott Brick.

I had been itching to find out what happens next as book one, The Passage, leaves us with such a cliff hanger. The Twelve doesnt let us down as the threads of this epic and apocolytic tale are woven together so we can start to understand what has happened, and the parts that all are playing.

There is no doubt that book three will be just as powerfull, I cant wait.

By the way the narration of both of these by Scott Brick is simply first class. A joy to listen to.

'We are the last defence.I've seen him on the news. Followed the stories about what happened to John Smith. To the world he's a mystery, but to me ... he's one of us. Nine of us came here, but sometimes I wonder if time has changed us, if we all still believe in our mission. There are six of us left. We're hiding, blending in, avoiding contact with one another, but our Legacies are developing and soon we'll be ready to fight'....

Plenty of action as the megadorians pursue the heroes. Good fun but I was left wanting more and felt it ended pretty quickly.
Will be waiting for book three though!

January 1937. Jack Miller has just about run out of options. His shoes have worn through, he can't afford to heat his rented room in Tooting, and he longs to use his training as an specialist wireless operator instead of working in his dead-end job. When he is given the chance to join an arctic expedition, as communications expert, by a group of elite Oxbridge graduates, he brushes off his apprehensions and convinces himself to join them.

This is a really frightening tale. It transports you to a world of ice and butal behavior exploring the position of outsiders to the group. Well worth listening to.

Ok. So it takes a long time for this to get going but if you stick with it its good by the end. I think that as a book its a bit too slow but the reading of it is good.

The year is 1984 and the city is Tokyo.

A young woman named Aomame follows a taxi driver's enigmatic suggestion and begins to notice puzzling discrepancies in the world around her. She has entered, she realizes, a parallel existence, which she calls 1Q84 - "Q" is for "question mark". A world that bears a question....

On the plus side this has a very good plot and is well narrated. On the minus it should have been massively edited and has explicit sexual scenes which I didnt think were always required by the plot. I did stick with it to the end and the final book was faster moving and more enjoyable. To sum it up try it before you buy and dont purchase just because of the hype.

My name is Peter Grant and until January I was just probationary constable in that mighty army for justice known to all right-thinking people as the Metropolitan Police Service (as the Filth to everybody else). My only concerns in life were how to avoid a transfer to the Case Progression Unit - we do paperwork so real coppers don't have to - and finding a way to climb into the panties of the outrageously perky WPC Leslie May.
