When Harold Fry nips out one morning to post a letter, leaving his wife hoovering upstairs, he has no idea that he is about to walk from one end of the country to the other. He has no hiking boots or map, let alone a compass, waterproof, or mobile phone. All he knows is that he must keep walking - to save someone else's life.
"Exquisite - a road 'movie' with a difference."

There is pain, love, lose, peace, sadness and also joy and laughter, but I think this book is very much like a mirror to your own life experience. I am sure if I read this book a decade ago it would be different for me but still doesn't take away from the fact that it is touchingly written and beautifully read.

The Isle of Lewis is the most desolate and harshly beautiful place in Scotland. When a bloody murder on the island bears the hallmarks of a similar slaying in Edinburgh, police detective Fin Macleod is dispatched north to investigate. Since Fin himself was raised on the island, the investigation represents not only a journey home but a voyage into his past. Each year twelve island men sail out to a remote and treacherous rock called An Sgeir on a perilous quest to slaughter nesting seabirds.

My 1st Peter May book, coming from Dexter, Rankin et al, I was happy to discover another great writer.
The depth and breadth of the story and character was impressive. The changing from past and present was at times demanding of your attention - you can just about do the dishes whilst listening, anything else and you lose the plot.

It would have been a perfect 5 start if I felt convinced of the 'voice' of the young protagonist in the early part of the story, 8 year olds just dont speak like that and the narrator had trouble making it any more convincing. Ending was okay but the last couple of sentence was..... worth finding out for yourself.

Would love to give it 4.5stars
Highly recommended. I will be checking out his other books.

Nobody likes The Complaints - they're the cops who investigate other cops. It's where Malcolm Fox works. He's just had a result, and should be feeling good about himself, but he's a man with problems: his new job is Jamie Breck, a dirty cop but no one can prove it. As Fox takes on the job, he learns that there's more to Breck than anyone thinks.

Fox though not quite as dark and hasn't had the time to build up the depth of character as Rebus was still enjoyable. Well read.

The Western Front, 1916. Private Percy Blakeney wakes up. He is lying on fresh spring grass. He can hear birdsong, and the wind in the leaves in the trees. Where have the mud, blood, and blasted landscape of No Man's Land gone? Madison, Wisconsin, 2015. Cop Monica Jansson is exploring the burned-out home of a reclusive - some said mad, others dangerous - scientist when she finds a curious gadget: a box containing some wiring, a three-way switch and a potato. It is the prototype of a life-changing invention....
"An easy listen, not quite Discworld"

I could recognise Terry Pratchett's voice in this but not having read Stephen Baxter I didn't know what to expect. The characters are a bit flat and the 'sci' in the sci-fi is not as demanding, not enough of Terry Pratchett's anarchic take on science, religion and life, but its only the 1st book.....
