Ever since he can remember, Dom Joly has been fascinated by travel to odd places. In part this stems from a childhood spent in war-torn Lebanon, where instead of swapping marbles in the schoolyard, he had a shrapnel collection -- the schoolboy currency of Beirut. These early experiences left Dom with a profound loathing for the sanitized experiences of the modern-day travel industry and a taste for the darkest of places.

Didn't know what to expect. Great that Dom Joly narrated it too. Give it a go.

A day like any other for security chief Tracy Waterhouse, until she makes a purchase she hadn't bargained for. One moment of madness is all it takes for Tracy's humdrum world to be turned upside down, the tedium of everyday life replaced by fear and danger at every turn. Witnesses to Tracy's Faustian exchange in the Merrion Centre in Leeds are Tilly, an elderly actress teetering on the brink of her own disaster, and Jackson Brodie, who has returned to his home county in search of someone else's roots.

My second Kate Atkinson. I read the last one so this was my first listen. I enjoyed it, but as with the other one I had read I find the coincidences a little too much. It took a little while to get into as I found I was easily distracted. But got my act together and made myself pay attention and then I was hooked.

When Mickey Haller is invited by the Los Angeles County District Attorney to prosecute a case for him, he knows something strange is going on. Mickey's a defense lawyer, one of the best in the business, and to switch sides like this would be akin to asking a fox to guard the hen-house.

Both Haller and Bosch are in this one. That was a bit hard to get used to as I'm used to Bosch being the leading character. I enjoyed it. Not perfect, but if you know Connelly then you won't be disappointed.

Inspired by breathtaking views and romantically dreaming of finding love in the mountains, Tony Hawks impulsively buys a house in the French Pyrenees. Here, he imagines, he will finally fulfil his childhood fantasy of mastering the piano, untroubled by the problems of the world.

This is the first Tony Hawks book I have listened to, having read a couple of his previous books. As he has also narrated this book it feels as though he is sitting in your front room having a chat over a cup of tea. A lovely, easy listen. I was only disappointed it was quite short. Did it really need to be abridged?

The astonishing true story of the boy who was healed through his amazing connection with horses. When their son Rowan was born, Rupert and Kristin's dream had come true. But the dream became a nightmare when their beautiful boy developed a disorder that left him incapable of communication, tormented by raging fits, requiring 24-hour care - and shattering their lives. Then, one day, father and son were walking in the woods near their house and stumbled across their neighbour's old brown horse, Betsy.

    Story

I wasn't sure about this to start with as the narrator is obviously the author rather than a professional actor. However, his story telling was insightful and when I finished the book I didn't want to start another one for ages as this one stayed with me and I kept thinking about it. I'm not sure where I stand on 'alternative' healers etc, but the journey they had and the outcomes achieved were heartwarming to say the least. I have a son similar in age and I love horses so I could relate to it to a degree, but even without that I think the story and the journey, both physical and emotional, is an amazing adventure.
