A new-born baby is found wedged in a vanity cabinet in a rundown apartment near Montreal. Dr Temperance Brennan, forensic anthropologist to the province of Quebec, is brought in to investigate. While there, she discovers the mummified remains of two more babies within the same room. Shocked and distressed, Tempe must use all her skills and inner strength to focus on the facts. But when the autopsies reveal that the children died of unnatural causes, the hunt for the mother - a young woman with a seedy past and at least three aliases - is on. The trail leads Tempe to Yellowknife, a cold, desolate diamond-mining town on the edge of the Arctic Circle, where her quest for the truth only throws up more questions, more secrets, and more dead bodies. Taking risks and working alone, Tempe refuses to give up until she has discovered why the babies died. But in such a hostile environment, can she avoid being the next victim?

"Once again Reichs spins a genuinely gripping tale in an interesting and different environment that's peppered with authentic forensic science and peopled with well-drawn, rounded characters." (Myles McWeeney, Irish Independent)
"You'll want to keep turning the pages long after lights out to find out what happens next...Reichs' real-life expertise gives her novels an authenticity that most other crime novelists would kill for." (Michelle Davies, Daily Express)
"Stealth, intrigue, intelligence."
I thoroughly enjoyed another book from Kathy Reichs. Her usual twists and turns had me guessing each chapter. I didn't see the final twist until very close to the end. Brennan demonstrated her usual brains .v. brawn with another character besides Ryan this time - making for a welcome change from the norm. Well worth a listen!
"An excellent read, or should I say listen!"
Some years ago I bought the first ten of Kathy Reichs Bones books after enjoying the TV series. They were excellent, so good in fact that I now have all her books bar one on audiobook. Guess what my next buy will be? This book is excellently written, like all the ones that came before it and hopefully, like all the ones still to come. The author has an excellent style of writing that is easy to keep up with whether reading or listening to, all the books I've listened to have very good narrators that are easy on the ear making the storyline easy to follow as well. I am now looking forward to my next Tempe Brennan book and hopefully many more to come
"A gripping listen"
At first I struggled with the American accent, but as I'd always wanted to read Kathy Reichs and never found the time, I stuck with it, and I'm so glad I did. Listening to and from my walk to work, I found myself walking slower just so that I could listen more. I've now started to download and listen to Kathy's earlier books. If you like your crime/detective novels, with science thrown in I'd recommend this book and Kathy Reichs whole heartedly.
"Good"
Somewhat predictable but in a good way - Kathy Reichs doing what she does well.
